In ancient Greek mythology, twelve gods and goddesses ruled the universe from atop Greece's Mount Olympus. These Olympians had come to power after their leader, Zeus, overthrew his father, Cronos, leader of the Titans. The three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, all split the world into three different parts, Zeus got the sky, Poseidon got the seas, and Hades, the underworld.
Each of the male Titans joined with one of his sisters to have children. Cronos married his sister Rhea, when they had children, Cronos thought that one of the children would overthrow him too. To stop from being overthrown, he swallowed each of his and Rhea's children as they were born - Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. Being immortal, this did not kill them, but they remained trapped inside him. When Rhea was close to giving birth to her fifth child, Zeus, she thought up a plan to send him away to grow before her husband could swallow him too. When Cronos came for the child, Rhea took a rock and put clothes on it to fool him, and Cronos swallowed the rock. Zeus grew quickly, and became stronger. When he came back, he gave his father a potion that would make him throw up, and Cronos threw up his other four children.
